What
Coaching and tuition are not the same.
Tuition, while beneficial to many, simulates regular school in running a parallel universe of scheduled lessons, fees and content in an almost one-size fits all environment (and this is regardless of the small class sizes). But coaching is very personalised and pays specific attention to individual students’ needs and wants, tailoring the momentum and engagement accordingly. Coaching is also a far more effective and value-laden approach, especially for today’s post-secondary students who appreciate respect for their individual strengths.
In a perfect world, GP coaching should not be necessary, especially for high-performers.
Coaching for almost all H2 subjects is quite understandable – new subjects, new content, new approaches, new marks weighting etc. But GP is a different animal in this scenario. Students still clamour for structure and study like H2 subjects. Some competent students develop anxiety in the company of uber-quality peers who keep dominating class discussions and submitting premium work. This is exacerbated (and rightfully so) by different GP tutors adopting their own approaches in every class. Then comes unnecessary tension, comparing notes and chatter even when things are going just fine.
Again, ideally, students need not be going for GP coaching. They get pretty good compiled topical information packs in each JC, most teachers can engage them, and the bulk of Singapore students are quite competent (as insecure as they can feel).
Then why waste extra time and money outside school? Well, if you are an ‘A’ Level student now, typically, any of the following could be happening before you seek Gryphon Point:
You are not able to keep awake during scheduled lessons (for any reason at all).
You are likely to have lots of questions that you are not able to ask in class (for any reason at all).
You seem to be very engaged in the subject but routinely get Cs and Ds for either or both the GP essay and comprehension exercises.
You could be having trouble relating to your class tutor in school.
You do not want to be held into a timeslot, location or repetitive lessons with popular tuition agencies.
Gryphon Point coaches in an incisive and personalised way. No cookie-cutter prescriptions here.
The idea is to keep the coaching 1-to-1 or at most 1-to-3 students so that more can be gained per person from each session. While priority engagement is for Year 6/JC2 students who have exhausted other avenues or have little time on their hands, Year 5/JC1 students and private candidates are welcome too.
